Windsurfing Sails
Windsurfing sails are a far cry from the cloth and canvass of sailing ages past. They’re made of high strength polymers that are reinforced at key points with materials like Kevlar or carbon fiber. The pounding a windsurfing setup takes actually requires materials such as this to perform well. That’s not to say you’re going to find any other sailing vessels sporting old bed sheets these days either.
The mechanics of sailing harness the difference between the air currents and water currents to propel a craft in pretty much any direction a pilot could desire. Windsurfing sails are no different in this regard. It’s just that your average sailing vessel isn’t built to do flips, 360’s, or even really to leave the water for the most part.
Those are all things that windsurfing sails are supposed to be able to withstand. Just imagine the impact that accompanies a failed flip, and you can see why a material like Kevlar isn’t as unreal as it sounds. The sails on your windsurfing setup are at the heart of what makes it different from wave surfing, and they certainly live up to expectations in the composition department.
