Kite Surfing

Kite surfing is also known as kite boarding. It is a sport where a boarder attaches themselves to a kite, much like those used by paragliders. Instead of being used to take flight, the kite in kite boarding is used to propel the surfer along the water’s surface. Depending on wind conditions, some areal tricks are possible.

Kite surfing claims to have been invented by the Chinese in the 13th century, though their invention died out long before the modern advent of kite surfing as a sport. For sporting purposes, kites became available in the early nineties for surfers. Prior to the commercial availability for surfing; kites were experimented with as a means of propulsion for all kinds of things, from sleds to roller skates.

In kite surfing, the size of kite used is dictated by the wind conditions. The heavier the wind, the smaller the kite needs to be for propulsion. If you use a kite that is too large for conditions, you’ll have a hard time staying on the water. Kite boarding has become very popular in the last fifteen years.
